Haunted house film about a pair of sleep deprived parents who begin to experience disturbing visions after moving from the city to a country estate. Alex and Penny have just become parents of a baby boy when they decide that the city is no place to raise a child. Relocating to a farmhouse, the couple finds their relationship deteriorating due to the demands of caring for a newborn, including a lack of sleep. When Alex and Penny begin seeing a mysterious woman around the house, they at first dismiss the sightings as hallucinations brought on by sleep deprivation. But as the visions appear more often, the parents are forced to consider that evils are at work in their home. Cathy's Curse (1977)

One man's past comes back to haunt his family in this low-budget Canadian horror story. George Gimble was just five years old in 1947 when his mother abandoned her husband and young daughter, taking George with her. George's father and sister drove off into the night to look for them, but died in a freak auto accident. Thirty years later, George (Alan Scarfe) is married to Vivian (Beverly Murray), an unhappy woman who is recovering from a nervous breakdown, and they have a seven-year-old daughter, Cathy (Randi Allen), who keeps to herself. George has moved his family into the house his parents used to own, and before long Cathy finds a ragged old doll that she carries with her at all times. The doll carries the ghost of George's late sister, and as the angry spirit takes control of Cathy, the child develops demonic powers and uses them to punish her parents and playmates. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

In this blend of psychological thriller and courtroom drama, Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) is a 19-year-old college student who begins displaying bizarre and troubling behavior; as her actions become increasingly destructive and shocking, Emily begins speaking in strange tongues and destroying religious symbols that surround her. Emily's parents believe that their daughter has become possessed of the devil, and the Catholic Church agrees to authorize an exorcism of the young woman. As Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) attempts to drive the demons from Emily's body, the girl dies in the midst of the taxing ceremonies, and Father Moore finds himself charged with negligent homicide. Attorney Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) is hired to represent Father Moore against prosecutor Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott), who intends to prove there were concrete medical explanations for Emily's behaviors, including epilepsy and schizophrenia, all leading to a heated courtroom debate between the notions of faith and science. Beyond the Door (1974)

Jessica Barrett is a young mother in San Francisco. Her family and friends begin to notice odd behavior around the time she falls pregnant with her third child. As the strangeness intensifies, Jessica begins to display signs of demonic possession including spinning her head all the way around and projectile vomiting. Dimitri, a lover from her past, shows up claiming to be able to help her, but it turns out he is in league with the entity possessing her, and is aiding the birth of her child, assumed to be the Antichrist, in exchange for the thing saving his life years before. The film ends with the entity turning on Dimitri, and suggesting all events were done for its own amusement. The entity then kills Dimitri, leaves Jessica's body, and the child is stillborn. At the end of the movie the young boy is seen throwing a toy red car (a symbol of toying with Dimitri) in the bay suggesting that he is the Antichrist.

End of the Line (2007)

A ride on the subway takes a woman to an unexpected and very dangerous place in this independent horror thriller from Canadian filmmaker Maurice Devereaux. Karen (Ilona Elkin) works as a nurse at a psychiatric hospital and has had a very trying day dealing with new patients, made all the more stressful by the news that a close friend and former patient has killed herself. Wanting nothing more than a quiet evening at home, Karen is waiting on a subway platform when she's approached by a religious zealot who wishes to talk to her. She isn't interested, but the stranger soon gets her attention when he demonstrates that the cross around his neck hides a switchblade. Mike (Nicolas Wright), another commuter waiting for his ride home, comes to Karen's rescue and they board the train together. However, before they can reach their stops, a power failure brings the subway to a halt and Karen and Mike find they're trapped with a handful of fanatics belonging to the same sect; they are convinced the Apocalypse is on the way, and before the Rapture can take place, they must sacrifice the non-believers, which means Karen and Mike must fight for their lives. Then she becomes pregnant again, but the strange thing is that she was told she could never become pregnant again. How is it possible? It is not for long when the mysterious beings enter the house's walls. Demons 2 (1986)

A high-end apartment complex is the setting for demonic disaster in this like-minded splatter sequel to the 1985 cult hit Demons.
A spoiled young woman named Sally (Coralina Cataldi Tassoni) is hosting her own birthday party in her apartment. Other characters in the building include a man (David Knight) and his pregnant wife (Nancy Brilli), a little boy who is alone for the evening, and a gym full of workout maniacs. In each apartment, televisions are all tuned to a horror film in which a group of young people find evidence of demons which precedes their becoming possessed. Upset that an ex-boyfriend is coming to her party, Sally goes into her room and turns on the film. A demon bursts through her television. Moments later, the possessed Sally enters the party and slaughters all of her guests, turning them into demons. The possession spreads throughout the building as tenant after tenant is transformed, leading to a furious battle between the exercise fanatics and a pack of demons. The young husband manages to stay alive and makes a desperate attempt to save his wife -- who is being tormented by the now-possessed little boy. Burnt Offerings (1976)

Dan Curtis, director of TV's Dark Shadows series, directed this eerie haunted-house thriller about a house which draws energy from its inhabitants and selects its own "keeper" from the family of Ben and Marian Rolf (Oliver Reed & Karen Black), who rent the strangely-affordable house one fateful summer then find themselves slowly succumbing to its creepy powers. The photography is suitably moody, and many of the standard haunted-house cliches are used to decent effect -- particularly a violent scene in which the surrounding woods form a barrier to prevent the family station wagon from escaping the area -- but the pace is too leisurely overall, climaxing with the type of grim ending employed by nearly every mainstream horror film in the late 70's. Black's spooky looks are used to maximum effect, but are never quite as chilling as the final shot of Curtis's TV movie Trilogy of Terror from the previous year. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Mausoleum (1983)

In this modest but well-wrought occult horror film, Susan Farrell (Bobbie Bresee) innocently visits her family's mausoleum at the age of 10, and, due to an ancient curse on the first-born in her family, is possessed by a blood-thirsty demon. The demon does not manifest until two decades later, when Susan begins to dispatch one victim after another -- from the gardener to the delivery boy. The maid Elsie (La Wanda Page) has some well-placed, down-to-earth comments on the weird and murderous ambience, and fortunately a good friend is a trained psychologist who, odd as it may seem, knows about demons, perhaps through a grad-level seminar. Since this film is not as graphically violent as many other '80s and '90s horror flicks, audiences hooked on unremitting gore will have to look elsewhere. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The Demon Murder Case (1983)

The made-for-TV Demon Murder Case has received an inordinate amount of airplay since its initial telecast on March 6, 1983. We suspect that this has something to do with its star, a young and callow fellow name of Kevin Bacon. Though he receives top billing, Bacon is hardly the hero of the piece; in fact, he's a murderer. Demonologist Andy Griffith (you read that right), priest Eddie Albert and clairvoyant Cloris Leachman deduce that Bacon was acting under the influence of Satan. Once this has been established, the threesome work overtime to exorcise Bacon's friend Charlie Fields. If you listen closely, you'll recognize Harvey (Torch Song Trilogy) Fierstein as the voice of the eponymous demon. Also starring Ken Kercheval, Richard Masur and Joyce Van Patten, Demon Murder Case was filmed on location in Newport, Rhode Island. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Evil Altar (1988)

True, Evil Altar has its share of imperfections and flaws. Some viewers may be turned off by the lack of originality or by a few technical problems, but I certainly wasn't bothered by these imperfections during the screening of this movie. Evil Altar is a story of Reed Weller, a sorcerer, a warlock and Satan's faithful servant who likes to torture and sacrifice unfortunate kidnapped persons in his barn. In the beginning of the movie, even before the titles, Reed Weller assigns an unfortunate boy suspended from the ceiling to collect a hundred and three children that should serve as offerings. Then, the evil man cuts the boy in the chest and informs him that his soul may be taken away any time. Apart from kidnapping and sacrificing people, Reed Weller also likes to boast and he does so by stating his power is absolute. Self-confidence is what I especially liked about this bald-headed character... Thirty years later, the kidnapped boy still roams the countryside in order to collect one hundred and three children. He is known as The Collector and he's ugly as hell. One day, he hits a local kid across the head with a baseball bat, and that's where problems begin. Up to this point, The Collector was supplying Weller with kids from other towns since local kids were of no use to Weller. When a lawyer from the city stops in Weller's town, The Collector strikes again and abducts the lawyer's son. The plot thickens. The Collector is shot down by a local girl during a hunting accident. In his sack, a curious surprise is hidden. The girl's father calls the cops, the local sheriff appears, and the viewer immediately gets the impression something's not right here. Indeed, the sheriff is in a league with Weller, and so is about every man and woman in this town. . As it is revealed later, a number of townspeople made a pact with the devil in exchange for a little favor. These poor fools are now completely under Weller's power. When the sheriff notifies his master of the hunting accident, The Evil Man resurrects The Collector, and sends him out to haunt the girl who had the nerve to mess with Reed Weller. The girl, her brother, the brother's girlfriend and the lawyer searching for his son all have to face the powers of darkness in order to save their souls... Evil Altar offers not only this intriguing plot but also some blood, especially near the end of the movie. In one scene, The Collector visits the poor girl who shot him, pulls a bullet out of his guts a gives it to her as a souvenir. There is also a man with a hatchet embedded in his back, one throat slashing (not too convincing, I'm afraid) and one nice stunt involving The Collector being set afire and thrown into a swimming pool. One complaint about the ending: With regards to Reed Weller's assertions concerning his absolute power, it seems to me that The Evil Man was defeated too easily in the finale.

Cassandra (1986)

Cassandra is a great film, but one that's more in the vein of classic horror pacing than modern attention deficit syndrome-caterers. Scenes develop slowly and there are very subtle, Eraserhead-like pauses between bits of dialogue in some sections, as well as an exemplary conveying of unspoken communication.

Other than saying that Cassandra is about a young woman who is experiencing visions of horrors that she's not sure really occurred or not, I would rather not describe the plot. Much of the effectiveness of the movie hinges on a gradual realization of what's going on and what the various characters' roles are. However, just so you're not completely in the dark (if you're reading this trying to decide whether you'd like to check out the movie or not), the premise concerns an upper-middle-class Australian family with apparent marital problems. The husband, a photographer, is having an affair, and the wife, a fashion designer, always seems uncomfortable, although we don't know why exactly. Cassandra is their daughter, and her nightmares are getting worse and interfering with her daily functioning.

The first half creates and continues to build a strong sense of foreboding. Although it alters somewhat when the first `real time' killing occurs, the alteration is equally successful, as the foreboding evolves into a story of increasing distrust that conveys the sense of the floor falling out from underneath you that is inherent in distrust. The last third or so - when it turns into a more by-the-numbers stalker story - is a bit less engaging, but it still works.

Cassandra is a lower-budget film with a minimum of sets/settings, but those that are there are used to maximum potential. Particularly captivating is the "old farmhouse" seen in both black and white (in Cassandra's nightmares) and in color at different times. The farmhouse comes across like an evil Andrew Wyeth painting come to life. Also particularly effective is the score, which in its minimalist and slow-moving way, is as responsible for buildling tension throughout the film as any other element.

Any horror fan who doesn't need constant action and gore to be entertained should seek out Cassandra on video, as well as anyone else who enjoys films that masterfully create various atmospheres of unease.

Ghosthouse (1988)

This Italian haunted-house outing begins with strange, paranormal emanations being picked up as radio signals by a group of Boston youths, who trace the signal to an abandoned estate. When they enter to investigate, they are attacked by the malevolent spectre of a young girl and her sinister-looking clown doll, who manages to decimate nearly the entire cast. The ensuing mayhem incorporates some of the goriest effects ever to grace a haunted house film, including axe murders, acid baths, impalements, and decapitations -- the nastiest of which features an unfortunate teen bisected by a falling pane of glass. Despite a fairly rich atmosphere and an ominous mood, this is really just a prolonged excuse for gruesome (though, admittedly, well-staged) giallo-style death scenes. After a spooky initial setup, the endlessly repeating musical ghost-message becomes profoundly annoying. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Fragile (2005)

A malevolent supernatural force besets a dilapidated children's hospital on the Isle of Man, terrifying the young patients and breaking their bones in this supernatural thriller from Spanish horror specialist Jaume Balagueró (The Nameless, [REC]). Mercy Falls Hospital has been in operation for nearly a hundred years, but now the authorities have declared it unfit for human inhabitation. As a result, the time has come for the hospital to close. But just as the helicopters arrive to transport the children to a new facility, bad weather forces them to remain grounded. Later, as Nurse Amy (Calista Flockhart) tends to her young charges, the children's bones begin to fracture for no apparent reason. Though the doctors remain baffled by the inexplicable injuries, the children sense something that the grown-ups do not. Somewhere in these crumbling corridors lurks a force of darkness consumed by pain, and filled with hatred. The children have dubbed it "The Mechanical Girl," and they claim to have stolen glimpses of it sobbing in the shadows. Lady in White (1988)

In this supernatural nostalgia piece, a young boy tracks down a murderer with help from the ghosts of a slain little girl and her mother. In a voice-over, grown-up writer Frankie Scarlatti describes the disturbing events that intruded on his idyllic small-town boyhood. Locked in the school cloakroom by some other boys on Halloween 1962, young Frankie (Lukas Haas) encounters the ghost of Melissa Anne Montgomery (Joelle Jacobi), who re-enacts her own death by strangulation just before an unseen adult enters the school and tries to do away with Frankie himself. While recuperating in the care of his widower father (Alex Rocco), Frankie conducts some detective work and learns that Melissa is one of ten children killed over the past decade. Further encounters with the girl's ghost -- and the mournful specter of her mother, the Lady in White (Karen Powell) -- do little to help the boy solve the mystery of who killed the kids. Meanwhile, an innocent black maintenance man becomes the scapegoat on which the police hang the killings. However, thanks to the damning but enigmatic evidence Frankie has discovered, the boy faces imminent danger from the actual killer, who ends up lurking terrifyingly close to home. The first cinematic teaming of horror greats Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi is a bizarre, haunting, and relentlessly eerie film that was surprisingly morbid and perverse for its time. Peter (David Manners) and Joan Allison (Julie Bishop) are honeymooning in Budapest when they meet mysterious scientist Dr. Vitus Verdegast (Lugosi) aboard a train. When the trio's bus from the train station gets into an accident, the young couple accompanies Verdegast to the castle of the spectral Hjalmar Poelzig (Karloff), an architect and the leader of a Satanic cult. Poelzig's treachery in World War I caused the deaths of thousands of his and Verdegast's countrymen, as well as Verdegast's own internment as a prisoner of war. While Verdegast was detained, Poelzig married first his wife, who later died, then his daughter. Now Verdegast has come back for retribution, and the honeymooners are trapped in the two men's horrifying battle of wits. Corpses preserved in glass cases, frightening Satanic rituals, and a climactic confrontation in which one of the characters is skinned alive add to the film's pervasive sense of evil and doom, along with the stark black-and-white photography by John Mescall that makes Poelzig's futuristic mountaintop mansion even more disturbing. Karloff and Lugosi are both excellent, with Lugosi doing a rare turn as a good guy, albeit one who has gone off the rails. Having little to do with the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name, The Black Cat has grown in stature over the years and is now widely regarded as the masterpiece of director Edgar G.
